Drama class is an ideal way for your child to grow in confidence and self esteem. Acting out scenes with their peers also develops their imaginative and articulation skills.
At Stagecoach we recognize that drama classes are particularly important to the development of young people. Perhaps even more so, when much of a child's leisure time is spent in front of a computer or television screen, an extra-curricular activity that hinders creative thought and interaction with others.
Stagecoach drama classes are typically made up of several activities:
- Warm up games and exercises. Drama games develop keen reactions and build up trust and teamwork. These games make our drama lessons fun and informative.
- Improvising and devising. Exercises where either individuals or groups work out a scene based on a scene presented by the teacher. These exercises help to stimulate creative thought.
- Working with scripts. Reading from and learning text then performing it under the direction of the teacher.
Other elements can be incorporated into the drama classes as and when time allows. These include:
Breathing
Learning and practicing the correct method of breathing necessary to support the voice (relevant to both speech and singing).
Voice production
Exercises to produce the voice correctly using the five organs of speech
Speech
Learning to articulate and modulate the voice and to use pitch, pace, inflection and pause effectively.
Mime and Movement
Creative use of the body and body language to express emotion etc.
characterization
Understanding how to build a character.
Stagecraft
Learning and understanding the areas of a theater and acting techniques.
Poetry and Sight reading
Memorizing and performing poetry and practicing the skill of accuracy and expression when reading aloud.
Alongside drama classes and drama lessons Stagecoach students also take weekly classes in singing and dancing. Studying these three disciplines in one three-hour session each week develops performing skills and boosts self-confidence. The camaraderie of the classes is unique, children make lasting friendships and many stay at their local Stagecoach school for up to ten years.
Stagecoach accepts children from the age of four upwards. Our junior group 'Early Stages' is specially designed for children aged four to six. These groups of young children work for 90 minutes in dance, singing and drama lessons. 'Early Stages' is an excellent introduction to the main Stagecoach school and prepares youngsters for the full three hour class at age six.
Drama is a comprehensive element of the performing arts and a key skill of any actor and musical theater performer. Childrens drama lessons and drama classes are the stepping stones to aquire the skills of a versatile actor.
